Moving boxes. A plan for every room.

Choose packing boxes around your belongings. Use smaller, manageable loads for dense items and leave the larger space for lighter things.

Choose moving boxes by what goes inside

A single large size rarely suits a whole house. Books, bedding and kitchenware need different packing arrangements. Begin with a room-by-room list, then group items that can be packed together.

  • Books and paperwork: plan smaller loads and check the box’s stated limits. See how to pack books for moving.
  • Clothes and soft furnishings: compare the usable space with the amount you want to pack. Keep the closed box easy to handle.
  • Breakable belongings: allow for suitable protection and separation. A box alone is not a complete protective packing system.

How many moving boxes do I need?

There is no reliable box count based only on the number of bedrooms. The amount you own, how much you sort out and the sizes you use all change the answer.

  1. List the shelves, cupboards and loose items that need packing.
  2. Pack a representative small group into the box size you are considering.
  3. Use that trial to estimate similar groups, recording the size as well as the count.
  4. Keep unusually bulky or delicate items on a separate list for your mover.

A trial pack is more useful than treating a “two-bedroom kit” as a guarantee that everything will fit.

What should a moving box pack include?

Check the quantity of each box size and whether tape, labels, wrapping or inserts are included. A pack of 20 mixed boxes is a different offer from 20 identical boxes. Compare the complete contents and delivered total.

Can I reuse boxes for moving?

Inspect the base, corners, seams and closures. Set aside boxes that are damp, crushed or torn, and check any load guidance that is available. Previous use and storage conditions matter; a box that looks large enough may no longer be suitable.

Make each box easier to find

Use a destination room and a short contents list. Keep essentials separate so they remain accessible during the move. Royal Mail’s moving guidance also recommends matching box size to the weight of the contents and keeping clear labels.
