Pack books in manageable loads, protect their covers and corners, and label each box for the shelf or room it belongs in. A large box can become heavy before it looks full.
1. Sort before you choose boxes
Separate books you are taking from those you plan to donate or leave behind. Group the rest by destination room or shelf. Keep anything you want to read during the move in your essentials bag.
Set aside unusually large, valuable or fragile volumes. Ask a specialist mover or conservator about those rather than applying a general household method.
2. Try one manageable load
Start with a smaller box whose condition and stated limits suit the job. Pack a small group and check the total weight before filling more boxes the same way. Stop before the load becomes difficult to handle.
Royal Mail’s moving advice recommends smaller boxes for heavier contents and larger boxes for light belongings.
3. Protect covers, corners and empty spaces
Use clean, dry material appropriate for the books. Avoid putting tape directly on a cover or dust jacket. Arrange books so corners are supported and bindings are not forced into an awkward position.
Use suitable packing material to keep the load from shifting, without pressing the covers against the lid. Keep liquids and damp items out of the same box. General household packing materials may be unsuitable for rare or sensitive books.
4. Close and label the box
Follow the box’s assembly and sealing instructions. If the flaps cannot close normally, adjust the contents. Write the destination room and a brief contents description on a visible side, then number the box if you are keeping an inventory.

5. Keep an unpacking order
Put each load near its destination at the new home. Check that shelves are ready before unpacking. Keep empty boxes dry and inspect them before storing for reuse.
